Air Fryer Onion Rings

Extra crispy air fryer onion rings made with panko breadcrumbs and a buttermilk egg batter. A membrane-removal technique keeps the onion inside the breading so every ring stays intact.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large Vidalia (sweet) onion, sliced 1/2-inch thick rounds
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided (2/3 cup for dredging, 1/3 cup as backup)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or 1/2 cup regular milk + 1 teaspoon white vinegar, left to sit 5 minutes)
  • 1.5 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Slice the onion into rounds approximately 1/2 inch thick for even cooking.
  2. Separate each round into individual rings. Press your thumb against the interior of each ring and slide off the thin translucent inner membrane to prevent the onion from sliding out during eating.
  3. Set up three shallow bowls: (1) 2/3 cup flour seasoned with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper; (2) 2 beaten eggs whisked with 1/2 cup buttermilk; (3) 1.5 cups panko combined with smoked paprika, garlic powder, and remaining salt and pepper.
  4. Coat each ring in sequence — flour, then egg/buttermilk, then panko — pressing the panko firmly onto each ring so it fully adheres with no bare spots.
  5. Place coated rings on a plate. For best results, refrigerate 5 minutes before air frying to help the batter set.
  6. Arrange rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket with small gaps between each. Spray generously with cooking spray. Air fry at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, flipping at the 5-minute mark and spraying the new top side. Check at 8 minutes — rings are done when golden-brown and audibly crisp when tapped. Work in batches and keep finished rings warm in a 200°F oven.

Notes

Use Vidalia (sweet) onions for the best flavor — their natural sweetness caramelizes beautifully against the savory panko breading.

Do not skip removing the inner membrane from each ring — this is the key step that prevents the onion from sliding out of its breading shell.

For frozen store-bought onion rings: air fry at 400°F for 6–8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. No thawing or extra oil needed.

To reheat cooked onion rings: air fry at 375°F for 2–3 minutes. The air fryer is the only method that reliably restores crunch.
